Age groups, teams and recruitment!

The club has age groups playing in teams from age 6 years (Under 7) through to 15 years (Under 16). We currently hold the SFA Quality Mark Award at Standard Level. We are affiliated to the S.Y.F.A. (and therefore the S.F.A.), the West of Scotland Y.F.L, the Central Ayrshire Y.F.L, South Ayrshire Sports Council and Troon Community Sports Hub.

We draw our players mainly from the Troon area with many coming through the schools and local youth organisations. We are very much a Youth organisation, run and organised by parents. We encourage players to remain in contact with the club and many assist in the organisation, coaching and other capacities to add to the team of dedicated volunteers.

Club Information

Origins

The club is reported to have been established in 1970 by Chris Husband with only one team at Under 10 level - the club was named Troon Thistle and this name has survived to the present day.

Club base and venues

At present, the club has no “base”. However, we hope to establish one within Troon; somewhere we can call “home”.  The Committee is working hard, in partnership with the Local Authority and with the local community's backing, to achieve this in the near future.

Current locations in Troon are as follows:

  • Struthers Primary School (this is off Staffin Road from Deveron Road and Kilmarnock Road)
  • The Fun Fours and Seven-A-Side teams aged from U7 to U11 play their football at the pitches at Struthers PS
  • Hosiery Park (this is off Brown Avenue from Logan Drive & Dundonald Road).
  • Eleven-a-side teams from U12 onwards play at Hosiery Park

We also have the use of the Marr College playing fields, with the kind permission of S.A. Council and the school for which we are very grateful.

Ex Players

Our most famous ex-player to date has been Steve Nicol who played for Ayr United before starring in the famous Liverpool team of the late 1980's/early 1990's, he won the European Cup, 4 English Premier League titles, 3 FA Cup medals as well as 27 Scotland caps. He is currently a successful coach in USA.

Another ex-Thistle star also made it to the World Cup stage as Fraser Park turned out for the Turks & Caicos Islands, where he was resident, after answering an internet advert for players.

Donald McMaster also played for Liverpool FC with Steve Nicol, Kenny Dalgleish, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen and Ben Eastwood

Another ex-player who made a name for himself was Martin Fraser who was a goalkeeper with the Scottish Youth squad, where he was the only non-pro player.

Many of our ex-players have played the game with professional clubs, both here in Scotland and elsewhere in the world, including Neil Murray with Glasgow Rangers F.C. and teams on the Continent.

Current stars playing at a high level are Alan Hutton with Aston Villa, and a Scotland international (also Glasgow Rangers F.C./ Sunderland F.C/ Tottenham Hotspur F.C./Mallorca F.C), Neil Collins with Sheffield United F.C (also Sunderland F.C./Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C/ Preston North End F.C./Leeds United FC), Jamie Ness with Stoke City F.C. (also Glasgow Rangers F.C.)
